Choirstall fronts return to the Chancel

They fit so well you may not have noticed that our choirstall fronts have returned to the chancel at the front end of the church.

As part of the redevelopment work to create a more flexible community space, it was decided to relocate the choirstalls back to their original location in the chancel of St Mary’s.  They were moved from there in 1967, when a previous reordering created a choir at the east end of the nave.

Our plans also include the restoration of the choir seating.

The suite of choirstalls was designed by the then vicar, Henry Thomas Ellacombe, in 1845, and pre-date the pews which were installed in the 1880s.
