An exhibition celebrating the life and times of Henry Nicholson Ellacombe, Vicar of Bitton 1850-1916, traveller, writer and horticulturalist.
Henry Nicholson Ellacombe was born in the Vicarage at Bitton in 1822, when his father was curate and apart from school, university and clerical training, he lived all his life in Bitton, succeeding his father as vicar and dying in the same house where he was born at the age of 93. Famous in his own lifetime as an outstanding plantsman and horticulturalist, he left behind a great archive of material on gardening, his travels and on life in Bitton in the nineteenth century. The exhibition draws on these archive and other sources, including Ellacombe’s own published books to provide a picture of his life in Bitton and elsewhere.
