Dr Jim Pimpernel will explain how over 140 collieries in the Bristol area brought coal to Bristol and Bath. The Dramway (officially the Avon and Gloucestershire Railway) brought horse-drawn coal wagons from the mines to the river at Avon Wharf. Here several railway buildings survive (the most notable is the elegant Avondale house, which was the original management office). There was a stable for the horses, a workshop, and a weighing house. Coal unloaded here could be shipped to Bristol without having to pay a toll at Keynsham Lock. We are fortunate indeed that the focus for this activity was local to us, in our parish.
